LEARNING TO LOOK FORWARD WITH POSITIVITY
Dear readers,
Today, I want to talk about a concept we all need in order to look to the future with optimism: hope. And more specifically, I want to explore its opposite—hopelessness. Hopelessness is a feeling that tends to show up most strongly when we are unhappy or overwhelmed. Yet hope is as essential to the human spirit as air and water—it is one of the most vital forms of nourishment for our emotional well-being.
In this blog post, we will explore the following:
- What do hope and hopelessness really mean?
- What causes hopelessness?
- What are the symptoms of hopelessness?
- And most importantly: how can we overcome it?
What Is Hope, and What Is Hopelessness?
Times when we feel energized by life, supported by our dreams and goals, and connected to reasons for living—these are the times when we are filled with hope. Hope is believing in the possibility of something good in the future and making the effort to reach for it. Dreams, goals, wishes, and hope all form the emotional foundation of our lives.
Hopelessness, on the other hand, is a heavy emotion. It arises when positive thoughts about the future disappear or fade. It weighs us down, especially during difficult and emotionally draining times.
Common Causes of Hopelessness
- Feeling abandoned or left out
- Emotional disconnection or alienation
- Losing trust in others or one's environment
- Feeling inadequate or not good enough
- Lack of energy and motivation
- Feeling trapped or powerless
- Depression and anxiety disorders
These factors—alone or combined—can easily lead us into a cycle of hopelessness.
Signs of Hopelessness
- Feeling like there’s no reason to try again
- Being overwhelmed by negative thoughts
- Loss of interest or joy in daily activities
- Poor sleep quality
- Difficulty focusing or staying present
Recognizing these signs is a crucial first step to healing.
How Can We Overcome Hopelessness?
- Challenge your thoughts and try to think in a more positive direction.
- Nurture hopeful and future-oriented thinking.
- Reflect on what hopelessness has cost you—write it down.
- Imagine what your life could gain if you were hopeful instead.
- Look at your problems from a new perspective—shift your thinking.
- Talk to trusted people and share your emotions.
- Make new plans and take small but steady action steps.
Lastly, remember this: hopeless feelings can eventually become fixed thoughts. To avoid falling into a negative emotional–mental loop, train your mind to lean toward positivity.
I wish you days filled with hope and light.
